Aspirus Keweenaw Offers New Technology to Diagnose Heart Disease and Cancer.

New Scanner Combines High-Quality Diagnostic Images with Patient Comfort.

In order to better serve our patients needs, Aspirus Keweenaw has made a substantial investment to bring state-of-the-art imaging technology to the Western Upper Peninsula. The new scanner provides high-quality images to help doctors quickly and accurately diagnose heart disease and cancer. It is the only one of its kind in the Copper Country.

“This new scanner is a wonderful compliment to our existing Oncology, Pathology, Orthopedic and Cardiology service lines,” said Mike Hauswirth, Chief Operating Officer at Aspirus Keweenaw. “We already had top notch, experienced specialists in these fields; now we are providing the tools needed to make early diagnosis and save lives.”

Doctors use the scanner mainly to diagnose heart disease and to identify and locate cancerous tumors. Before the scan, the patient is injected with a safe radioactive substance, which travels in the bloodstream. During the exam, a detector records the location of the injection, and the CT scanner takes pictures of the person’s anatomy. Images from heart exams help doctors locate areas where the heart muscle is not receiving enough blood, which can eventually lead to a heart attack. Images from cancer exams show doctors the exact location of active tumors so that they can effectively plan surgery or other treatments.

“The experience and dedication of our staff, in conjunction with this exciting technology, is what makes Aspirus Keweenaw the first choice for hundreds of patients seen in my department every year,” says Gregg Fisher, Nuclear Medicine Manager. “Our goal is to provide the most advanced care possible, in a comfortable and compassionate environment.”

A physician referral is needed to schedule exams, but it does not need to be from an Aspirus Keweenaw practitioner. “We routinely see patients from all over the Copper Country, including Baraga and Ontonagon County,” says Fisher. “We are honored that patients make the choice to seek specialty services here at Aspirus Keweenaw.”

Aspirus Keweenaw is the only facility in the Western U.P. to have a X-ray guided (Stereotactic) Breast Biopsy Table. An alternative to open surgical biospy, a hollow needle may be passed through the skin into the suspicious lesion with the help of special breast x-rays. This procedure is much less invasive and time consuming than the surgical approach and has little or no pain and no scar.

Aspirus Keweenaw is one of only two facilities in the Upper Peninsula and the only one in the Western U.P. to offer Digital Mammography.
